匈牙利14日午夜起實施新移民法，並封鎖該國與塞爾維爾的邊界，不少難民改道克羅埃西亞，打算再穿越斯洛文尼亞，希望藉這條路線抵達心中的理想避難國度德國或奧地利，首批約150名難民16日已進入克羅埃西亞。

匈牙利封鎖邊境後，塞爾維爾派出至少10輛巴士從靠近馬其頓邊境的塞國小鎮普雷舍沃連夜出發，北上前往鄰近克羅埃西亞的小鎮希德，難民再步行進入克國。來自西非國家茅利塔尼亞的35歲阿瑪度說：「我們聽說匈牙利封鎖了邊境，警察告訴我們應該要走這條路線。」

克羅埃西亞總理米拉諾維奇說，難民將獲准通過，克國也將伸出援手。他表示：「克羅埃西亞完全準備好接納或引導這些人前往他們想去的地方，他們的目的地顯然是德國或北歐國家。」塞爾維爾則憂心忡忡，擔心匈牙利關閉邊境後，取道巴爾幹半島、希臘、馬其頓的難民將紛紛湧入塞國，屆時塞國將無力負荷。塞國負責難民問題的部長弗林呼籲匈牙利重新開放邊境，「至少讓婦孺通過。」

15日凌晨約有數百名難民被擋在匈牙利修建的利刃型鐵絲網外，1名抱著孩子的阿富汗婦女哭訴：「為什麼他們要這樣對待我們？」來自阿富汗的17歲少年巴席爾說：「天氣很冷，尤其是對那些有小寶寶的家庭來說，這個晚上很糟糕。」
